Make faster progress towards a leaner body, and a healthier and happier life, by “piggy-backing” new habits onto existing ones, says New Body Plan creator Jon Lipsey
You might think that because I created the New Body Plan system and because I used it to transform my body that everything fitness related comes easy to me. Well, I can assure you that it doesn’t.
Sure, I know exactly what I should do but that doesn’t always mean I do it. You see, there’s a difference between theory and practice and that difference arises because we’re human beings, not robots.
So, like everyone else, I mess up. And here’s a recent example: when we were based in an office before lockdown, I had my health and fitness routine down to a tee. I would get my morning black coffee from the same cafe. I would train at the same time each day. And I would take my supplements at the same time each day.
Then lockdown happened and my routine got ripped up. I was so busy focusing on the big stuff – trying to juggle work and childcare, or just trying to establish some kind of regular training routine – that the little things started to slip.
The other day I realised that I hadn’t been taking my preferred daily supplements, which happen to be our T-Drive (for overall performance and recovery) and Vit-D3 (for all-round health and immunity) as well as a fish oil capsule (for joint and heart health).
Here I am advising you guys on what to use but I wasn’t practicing what I preach. So I decided to do something about it and I used a technique that is one of the most effective things you can do if you want to establish a new habit.
Mug’s game
I decided to piggy back off an existing habit. What I mean is, I identified a habit that already existed and I tied the new one to it.
The existing habit I selected was the activity of making a cup of tea when I go through to the kitchen each morning. I also put the supplement bottles next to where we keep our teabags so they’d always be at hand.
By doing this, the new habit has taken almost no effort to establish. And that’s one of the key elements behind forming a new habit. Make things as easy as possible and it becomes easier to execute. And before you know it you’re losing weight and feeling great.
