I’d really let myself go and I wanted a proper programme to follow. I was overweight and I had put on a serious gut from drinking and eating rubbish – and a gut is the hardest to shift. You may not have looked at me and thought I was really out of shape but I felt really sluggish, really demotivated. I wasn’t sleeping well, I wasn’t eating well. And then you look in the mirror and you’re not happy and you know something has to change.
The diet side is a huge part of a transformation. There’s no point smashing out the sessions and going home and pigging out. I used to eat what I wanted. It wasn’t anything crazy but it was chocolate or ice cream or a few beers. You say to yourself it’s only a few here or there but it does add up. So when you take them out of your diet or you minimise them, you notice the difference.
I was actually surprised by the foods, like burgers and curries, that were in the diet. I say diet, it’s not a diet. It’s just nutrition. It’s just eating. So I was never starving myself and I was enjoying eating the foods that I was eating. It wasn’t at all restrictive. It was just the right foods to complement the plan.
A few of my friends and family asked me, how are you finding the food side of things? And I said, I’m eating foods that I like and I’m not hungry. So any mental challenge that you might expect with the food side of things, that was just eradicated.
I was just an ordinary guy following a plan. I said to myself, if I’m going to get a result I need to be all in. And you need to be honest with yourself. If you finish a session and you think, “I haven’t given that my all”, you need that self-check and you need to motivate yourself to push on. If you really want it then it’s quite a simple process. You follow the programme, you give 100% and you’ll get the results that you’re looking for.
